MONDAY JULY 6, 2009Earnings SeasonWith the end of the second quarter, we are ready to embark on a new earnings season. Alcoa, always the first large company to report, will report earnings on Wednesday. The talking heads will be in full hyper mode, crying over every missed penny in earnings and cheering each report that “beats the street.” Given the fragile state of the economy, I am sure the corporate earnings reports will move the markets. However, I believe the actual earnings themselves will be less important this quarter. The markets seem to have accepted that the earnings will be lackluster. The market’s attention will likely be more interested in the “outlook” of the companies. The commentary will provide insight into the “green shoots v. economic malaise” battle raging in the marketplace. Has the "green shoots" crowd been overly optimistic?
